It's supposed to be fun and goofy, you are supposed to sorta relate with it as a teenager who feels in love and is willing to fight for it. The whole concept of having to defeat evil exes is silly/funny but something you can also relate with, as it's a metaphor for emotional scars from the past you truly want to move on from.

On rewatch it feels kinda old… Idk how this movie became so famous it's fun but not really that good imho.

I liked the recent Netflix Scott Pilgrim anime though, it was more fun with the subversive/meta idea behind it.
