ships and sea is interesting. i wanted to write something about ship too but i dont know much about sailing

i wonder if its necessary to know all

l.ron hubbard says that its best to write only about things we know about, but its kinda overwhelming to learn about all the things you just want to use as a plot device

Eh, as with all rules they are kinda lax. If you want to write a pastor in story, do you really need to research all the religion? Probably not. Though, knowing a lot helps, definitely, and you can always just do research for a particular issue with internet any way. Though, I don't believe in precision, so I want for my story to lie a little about facts. For example, I don't want to know how some occupation is actually done by people, wat I want is to lie about it and write something convincing on the surface. So, I guess it all depends on style and taste

you are absolutely right, you can skip a lot of detail if it doesnt matter for the overall story anyway

you can get away knowing very little, and just describe them being in ship, and maybe a bit descripting the part of the ship they are on

i kinda like the techno-thriller style though, where there is attention to detail, but then again, too much detail is too much if its not relevant to the story or general atmosphere
