Deduction can very easily fall apart when a kanji has wildly different meanings. This happens a lot when one kanji gets appointed as the simplification of two different old ones, and unless you know the lore, you won't be able to deduct the meaning.
Deduction is extremely flawed which should be immediately obvious when you look at a dictionary listing out the meanings for some kanji.

And yes names are hard, it's one of the things I haven't finished learning. They often break rules and use ancient/trad readings as well. There is no simple way around it.

One of the kanji dicts has name readings listed, I think I will grind those (but I already encountered readings in some names that are not listed in said dictionary) and just read some generic name lists
Grindy stuff, I have been putting it off for long now. I enjoy learning special readings (for example geo names) and learning new kanji a lot more.
Very sloppy plan but hey, it's all I got for now

I like Anki because I can do it while riding on the indoor bike and it makes me feel like I'm being more productive
