And they all kinda have their own specialties. Norway solidified black metal into an actual genre distinctly separate from thrash and DM with the second wave BM bands in the late 80s early 90s. Sweden made more traditionally melodic BM and DM centered around Gothenburg, and in Stockholm you had the punky buzzsaw guitar DM bands like Dismember, they also had their own version of the goth deathdoom stuff which came out of the Peaceville Three in the UK with bands like Katatonia + Tiamat etc. Finland pretty much created funeral doom with Thergothon, Unholy, Skepticism etc, outside of that specific area the Finnish stuff from the 90s is all over the place, there were some bands like Demigod and Adramelech which gave their own interpretation of Bolt Thrower style mid-paced DM, and there were also a bunch of bands which created extremely bizarre and unique music. Like Nespithe is such a fuckin weird record and it feels like the kind of thing that could only be made by people living in a frozen Finnish swamp, idk lol
