One of the special skills i have compared to my coworkers is that i can summarize all the commonly used licences and many of the less common too

if you think about it, there is like 10 different versions of GPL only, which is just too much for person with no special interest to learn

some of my coworkers cant really even understand the license if they read it, because those are legal text, so you either need full concentration, or the capability to parse in your head what parts actually matter

anyway my point is that i used to be asked to summarize licenses at work, by summarizing i really mean to explain it in laymans terms

yeah sometimes they would even make fun of me for being opinionated about licenses, and arguing how MIT isnt real license. But i was kinda proud that i knew about this area that nobody else was really bothered to learn and understand.

but yeah, nobody asks me about licenses anymore, because now you have AI, which is way superior to summarize things. it can create nice tables and everything.

the point of the story i guess its that its useless skill now, useless knowledge altogether really. i wonder if you guys have some similar special knowledge that is now obsolete, i bet you do. even if we ignore programming altogether.

I studied root words, doubt that matters anymore.

other than maybe some personal insight about the topic i dont think that matters

I dont think there is useless skill. So, dunno. AI now can make palatable text for some unaware guy, especially when you tune the template and stuff. But no one says that writing is now useless, unless you are true AI believer and cannot distinguish between a donkey and an ass. So I would say nah, AI might as well do all things better than me. But wat I do has intrinsic value that AI cannot have, so, it doesnt matter, the only loss here is economic, there is no problem otherwise with AI or LLM or watever

Summarization is not really a rare skill though, or it is not really a skil. Any way, some people say dat AI summarization is ancient, and there is logic to it. After all, we cannot be mindful to all at all times, so, we have to have quick rules of thumb and knobs. So, we summarized apples in our imagination as round and sweet from many apple we see, corporations are summarization devices that have input/output and specialized domain, governments too summarize polity in one form. So summarization is just really a data technique that is really common, like when you buy yoghurt and look at ingredient, you only have confusing words but dat it just a summary, you dont know actual ingredients in its real form. Or how they are processed. So, its very useful, but it is also has quality obscuring stuff, like yoghurt ingredient can obscure that it has harmful stuff in it. So, yeah, summarization has nothing to do with skill or having skills, and perhaps it is not so bad if you suddenly feel that summarizing license is useless. After all, your skill is not represented by your summarization but your practical knowledge, any one can summarize license by reading it but not everyone can explain difference or which one is better, which is far different operation

I dont mean writing in general. In general writing is extremely useful skill, sure. But for this specific knowledge or skill i talked about, i would agree that it might have value. For me especially. But i thought about this carefully, think about it, useful, useless, (root word use). If you have no use for something then it is pretty much by definition useless.

I think you are correct and this is a good angle to this. I think my original claim was too broad. The knowledge itself isnt really useless.

No. Thats incorrect at least in one way. If you couldnt summarize license, would you feel that you are caring about them enough? Imagine a guy who you respect, and dat guy values this quality in you that you are able to summarize license. Point is dat watever you do, you are doing it usefully, and you really have no opt out. You are destined to be intrinsically useful, together with all you do, maybe there might be no purpose, but literally anything you do cannot be useless because if you do it or did it, then that on its own proves its own usefulness, but might not prove utility though. Any way, yeah, wat I want to say is dat you have no option but to be Sisyphus and just be you, Sisyphus rolls the boulder because he has no option, in other theory he enjoys himself while doing it. He enjoys his own person as it is, so, if you summarize license, you have no option but enjoy yourself in doing dat

Dunno, I would say knowledge can be useless(as in of having no use. Youll disagree but knowing all color of horse dung is of no use to a tax collector) but application of knowledge is never useless because it is effective(if you happen to know all color of horse dung, you can amuse others with such knowledge). So, value of useless knowledge still exist in social world, but practically and reasonably there is knowledge that is too specific to be applied and be useful

actually the ability to rate open source projects will be more important over time imo

people will optimize shit to fool the AI more effectively as LLMs and the systems that support them become better understood to attackers

I think even in 10 years you will need human analysts to really figure out if it's a good idea to use x technology in your project and actually the best descision

Basically, wat I wanted to say is that your choices haunt you in the present, and while you now stopped doing license summarization, your previous act of doing this affects you in the present and that on its own is enough to say that your ability to summarize license is never gonna be useless. More than that, if you continue doing it still (because summarizing licenses is wat you do), then even without apparent utility there is use to it, to maintain this ability that has integral importance to your being

Why for example forever games, like counter strike are popular? After all, people play them while hating the game, and its not like they cant stop or play other. It is because forver games are designed to be a habit, and habits are really human. People have habits that identify them strongly, for example hand gesture habits when you talk. Without this, being yourself is impossible. And its not like you can just randomly change hand articulation. Games are very similar to this, they are not just social and addictive, they are existential, they integrate into your being as a habit that has mythical quality, that promises only value, but that value is in you. So, habits like forever games boost your own person, there are many destructive habits which do the same, drinking is one. And when you start doing it, even just once, thats part of you, an integral piece. You can hide it, or not show it, even forget it. But it is still something that happened, it had an effect, you cannot be yourself without it, hence, there is infinite usefulness to habit. Not just value, but usefulness, because summarizing licenses is useful/of use exactly because of its you who is doing it

unrelateable scenario outside of the ugroid sphere of influence

can't put it into words but there is some great filtering effect with the AI here

something like 50% of the people genuinely can't put 1 and 1 together

In the workplace they will know there's some task that is somewhat complicated or outside their own field of expertise, but a task that's trivial for AI to do, eg. like you said, looking up, summarizing and listing the different licenses as a table.

They know AI exists but ask it questions like "do you think im pretty " or "do you think I should buy lenovo or acer to impress women" or some other retarded shit and don't understand they can use it to do actual work.

ya most people still can't do shit even when AI basically does it for you

half my coworkers or more deliver garbo when given any task still even with the most powerful and well-configured AI tools out there

If I might just expand on this a bit more…

It's not so much that they don't understand that an LLM can ALSO be used for work, not just fun. If it was that, it'd be a simple fix.

No, what I'm talking about is some deep rooted fundamental indo-nigger inability to see patterns and connections.

In the sense that, let's say they complained to you and wanted to automate some routine daily data entry task. You show them on whatever claude, gemini, gpt how to do it. "Look just decribe what you need, it'll do it for you and it'll even explain as much as you need if something is confusing"

Then a week later they'll have some problem that's basically the same thing again, but they will be incapable of making that critical connection
