rewatched this, probably my 3rd favourite Mizoguchi after Sansho and Ugetsu. Very emotionally resonant film and crazy that it came out in the late 1930s like a decade before Kurosawa even started directing his great films. I fuckin love Kurosawa but Mizoguchi is one of the most underrated filmmakers out there. I think Sisters of the Gion is super underrated as well and that came out 3 years earlier in 1936
