India is not a pleasant place. It has no beauty. Nothing can be understood from the conversations of its people or their comings and goings. There is no order, proportion, or symmetry in their art or their work. This country has neither noble horses, nor good meat, nor good melons, nor good grapes.
In its markets, you’ll find neither good food nor decent bread. One of India’s greatest flaws is its hellish heat.
People sweat from this heat and can’t find a place to wash.
That is why, when I took over this place, I had large stone pools, wheel-driven wells, and bathhouses built along the banks of the Ganges River.
I organized the gardens so that clean water would flow from every corner.
The only thing I love here, however, is the mango. No other fruit can compare to it in terms of flavor. A well-ripened mango is superior even to the sweetest melon.”
