You're right, but you're wrong. Cities of equal size still feel completely different depending on context. It's several factors compounding and working in tandem, not one linear scale.
Southern German urban layouts are more clustered than those in the north and east, and tolerance for close quarters rises with population density, sure. That alone isn't a problem.
The real issue is that density amplifies whatever social friction already exists, and diversity determines how much friction there is to amplify.
The more fractured a population is, the less shared understanding of norms and etiquette; the weaker the informal social policing that's otherwise always present.
Even "diversity" itself isn't the main problem lol, as long as the groups involved share broadly similar behavioral norms everything works out fine, but if you pass a critical threshold of a) the amount of others coupled with b) the degree of differences/seperation -> the friction becomes constantly visible and tangible
Then it's not just whatever overton window shifting one way, it's a more general expansion of it. The range of acceptable behavior widens on both ends. And the wider that range gets, the more stressful it becomes for everyone to navigate, and the more frequent and extreme the outliers become.
