The Medical "Cushion Effect

"Some trauma research suggests a potential "protective" role for fat in very specific, non-lethal scenarios:Anterior Abdominal Wounds: In some cases of abdominal gunshot wounds, a higher BMI has been associated with a lower risk of "peritoneal violation" (the bullet reaching the internal organs) because the extra tissue creates a longer path for the projectile to travel.

Triage Tool: Some surgeons use BMI as a factor when deciding whether a patient needs immediate surgery or can be monitored, as extra fat may have prevented a shallow wound from hitting vital organs.

Stab Wounds: The protective effect is more consistently seen with abdominal stab wounds, where a thick layer of fat can prevent a knife from reaching the organs.
