The idea of writing to the general audience ever shortening attention span is nothing new.
If anything, paperbacks from the 1950s get to the point so much faster than contemporary books that like to drag on a plot point for over a hundred chapters. Even stuff from the 30s starts with Conan already in a sword fight. Long overdrawn intros like Tolkien were the exception, not the rule.
