As far as pokemon goes, I thought it was really cool as a kid when I've seen someone play it on a gameboy. But later I got red and an emulator on a floppy (yes really, good times) from a classmate, started playing it and realized it's fucking boring.
As far as modern ones go, I recommend checking out Mareep in ZA legends, I've seen some streams about it and it's really cute how the lil electric sheep hops around.
Modern pokemon is controversial because it's low tech buggy slop but every fan has been saying the latest buggy ones like arceus, the next one after that and ZA are better in gameplay. I wouldn't know, I was bored with red already. Also there are literally thousands of pokemons so wtf.

I want to play newer pokemons because they have pretty cool gym trainers and stuff. Character design in Pokémon is generally pretty cool. My computer can't emulate Switch well though

It isn't meant to be played on emulator because when you are on computer you are more likely to stay on the computer. It is a genius design and one reason why it is so successful. It might be not a good game in the sense dat when you are already on the computer and you have something to compare with, but on it's own medium it is a good game
