I want to be spending my weekends contributing to a rust memory searcher/editor (as well as a few other pet projects) I started last year but cannot commit to it lately. I've also been depressed this and last week and have barely touched the bike.

The only things I've really programmed outside of work lately are 1) converting a bash script I used to use for converting my media library to be directplay-safe-with-most-streaming-devices to a rust program that can be called easily from most mass media downloader GUI tools like sonarr, radarr, etc and 2) started to write a manga formatter in rust that would convert typical scanlation uploads to look nice on a Kindle or other similar e-reader which are both tiny projects I only wrote cause I need them.

I'm going to try and go for a long ride today to reset my head and hopefully get more productive outside work. It usually works well.

Well, I guess I also spent a lot of time cleaning up how I run my home net servers as well, but mostly this just meant finishing work that I wouldn't really call programming I had started last year to put all the provisioning into saltstack so I can easily run it against any of my home servers from my raspberry pi that I run my VPN on to rebuild them should I brick one like I did with my media server 3 weeks ago.

I too finished this book last weekend. While it had me wanting to write pipelines to build ML models and build applications around those I have too many ideas ATM and not enough motivation.

Oh, so, you are on that Rust train? Wait, but memory searcher? Wat for, some reverse engineering or some thing? Do you have experience in authoring libraries? I had to fork photo_view library for my app and I'm thinking about modifying it a bit more and maintain… But that sounds like a big hassle, especially considering it library could be of a far better quality, but dat's how it would be on this Flutter ecosystem…

I feel like you maintain a considerable infrastructure… Like, how much big of your servers are? I haven't run no server, so, I wonder how you do it, just with containers or there is an ready solution which sets up every thing for you? I just down load from Rutracker, as I got no TV, or watch one…
Manga formatter, you mean to mess with colors and image and all dat? Are ereaders so good? If I know right, many of them are full color but not all, so, you mean that you have the black and white one, and normal manga won't look so good on it? It's pretty cool, as things like this really do make a difference, but that would be a huge pain, or may be I don't understand how exactly the process is happening… I just use Tachiyomi, can't you install Tachiyomi on Kindle? They are Android right?
Huh… So, it isn't too difficult to maintain it all then? I looked at SaltStack and it seem to be pretty nice tool, never heard of it… I guess that's because I never tried to run a server, but I always imagined it to be more of setting up containers and security, but modern devops are pretty advanced… The world gets smart too fast, us brainlets can't keep up… I have old lap top as Wifi hot stop, and I just use my old NixOS configs… So, I ejected harddrive from it and now it runs from USB stick… I use HDD for Anime image storage, I bought the converter so I do it from phone…
Though, ML? Heh, better learn Standard ML… … May be not, but since AI thing is now commonplace or wants to be, and it a lot of information about it, I never tried or read about it… Dunno, I don't have great ideas, like in my app only good idea for deep learning is suggestions, like when you about to move or copy file it suggests you a folder where to… But that most probably can be done with an alghoritm instead, so, wat kinda idea do you have for ML then? I prefer to read online documentation and online books and articles to normal books, so, don't remember which book I read last… Hmmmm…
I just been trying to make my app actually usuable, but since I switched to beta version of Flutter more bugs appeared of which I have no relation to… Like, damn, I really do want to rewrite it in Jetpack Compose, but also that will be very damn long… So, I been just improving things I can instead… My app works fine in emulators, but on custom Android skins might be way different behaviour… Bothers me a lot… Then I'm just sad about circumstances of life… Want things better, but they go the other way…

I am on the rust train for now but I do not believe in most of the selling points. To me I still think C++ has the best developer experience overall with the most competent people guiding the standard and production of the tooling. Ngl tho it's a lot of fun to write in a newer language where there's less baggage and all the modern accoutrements.

The memory researcher is for RE, yeah. I am actually planning to have it be a series of modules I eventually make into rust crates so the plan is to maintain these long-term.

I am the maintainer of a few work-related python packages that are data-related. It's a lot of fun once you get 20+ users but I it also consumes a lot of time once people start submitting issues and you have to worry about fucking up people's work with all your new ideas. What'll you use for versioning and publishing?

I am always looking for used data center equipment and so I have 3 empty server racks and some networking equipment that I wanna fill up eventually. For now I have just a raspberry pis running and a switch running some redundant networking services, an old gaming PC I turned into a media server mainly running Plex, radarr, sonarr, etc., a storage bay with tons of used HDDs that total up to 1 petabyte of storage that I use for backups and projects that require larger datasets and 2 8-year-old pizzabox servers I got for free from an old job (I use those mostly to experiment with Hadoop/spark and other cluster software). My server hardware is puny, but the more I experiment with ML stuff the more I want to get some beefier stuff. I eventually want to have tons of hardware in my home lab, but power requirements are hard to satisfy.

The media server is mainly because I want to watch the stuff I download anywhere, and also because I want any of my family/friends I give access to to also be able to download and watch anywhere. I have sonarr/radarr setup to pull mostly from public trackers but also Usenet.

I have lots of ideas for ML but it'll take time. I am trying to get more free credits from cloud providers to be able to build my models somewhere until I get good enough hardware at home to do it. There are lots of good open athletic performance datasets that I want to use to try and build and ML model I can use to do things like generate training plans for endurance sport athletes. I'm currently working on that until I get bored or find the datasets aren't sufficient to do it, but there's plenty of other ideas I have for ML projects as well.

I joined a scanlation group's discord to see why there haven't been any new uploads for one of my favorite mangas in over a year and it turns out the one guy doing it all died in the Ukraine war

Hey, how can a language which has no package manager have the best developer experience? I mean, it's powerful, but I guess it isn't as great… Of course I'm gonna biased, since I only wrote like two line C and C++ but it be big monster though… In my unprofessional opinion, Rust getting track is very good since that would make soft ware more safe… Many can say that competent guy wouldn't make big mistake, or just use tool and library to trace problem with memory and all, but really, even most ninja of ninja bound to make mistake, and some times mistake which no test can catch, and may be even ASAN… I'm a big fan of Go approach, simplicity of things, predictability, "don't be clever" and other koans, because they made big sense… A C++ compiler might have liberty in reordering statements for optimization, and you still need to write hyperoptimized code by hand, but Go one? Go compiler has subtile gurantees related to correct execution of Go programs, no way to write optimized code based on compiler intrinsic… Yeah, I believe Go is best thing ever, if I could write every thing I would, like Goroutine model has been getting some revision as of past years, but considering the Go's approach it ain't as bad… Rust is just very nice, abstractions cost zero, safe Rust is very fast, feels pleasant to use, Cargo is very good… But it gets increasingly complex very damn fast…
Huh… You maintain Python libraries about data but also do reverse engineering as a side hustle? Reminds me how education and experience makes a giant difference… I just use GitHub because I believe that since it biggest platform and more people… Yeah, though, in end it was some two change there and here, I cannot be bothered to spend weeks to find out how it works neither I wanna to… Damn…
That's a lot of server right there… So, you can access it from any where you say? Sound pretty convenient not gonna lie, I lived under NAT all of my life so I dunno how do they able to host Minecraft server on their computer and Friend join… I mean, that's impressive, all I ever able to do is to turn on Docker container with GitLab instance just for Fun, but dat was use less… Don't like automating all, I only write tools when it near impossible to do by hand… Mostly related to Anime images though, Flexbooru had many problems with the downloader, and I didn't have app with functionality I have now… Though, I been thinking about my app a lot, and gallery part of it I can't improve at all reasonably… Sad to see how slow it is on large directories, but this is in part my mistake as I didn't design it good from start, because didn't know how… In part it's because it cannot be fast because of Platform Channels…
Oh, that indeed sound pretty interesting ML idea… I mean, since you do a lot of sport, I believe it would be interssting to see result for Fun and profit… Though, I been more concerned on wat kinda functionality you can build with it… Years ago, AI was advertised every where, even camera was AI powered, but you never felt it being much more smarter than with out those AI thing… Though, Google Camera is some dank thing, I wonder if it includes some ML in it for real…

also the reason I go through so many steps to process manga is because I read it mostly on my kindle and for some stupid reason amazon doesn't want people to develop apps for it easily (altho imo the first kindle oasis is still the best ereader out there)
